How today's numbers are calculated
Each figure above is today so far: the verified daily total (from UN, Statista, Radicati, IEA, IATA and industry filings) multiplied by the fraction of the current day that has elapsed in your local time. At midnight the counters reset. Individual seconds vary — the aggregate is accurate to within roughly ±2% based on year-over-year growth.
Population figures use the UN World Population Prospects 2024 medium variant (births at 4.46/sec, deaths at 1.91/sec). Digital metrics blend Radicati Group forecasts, Statista industry reports, and public disclosures from Meta, Google, Netflix, and Amazon. Emissions come from IEA's Global Energy Review; flight movements from IATA and Eurocontrol; deforestation from FAO Global Forest Resources Assessment. Where sources disagree, we use the midpoint and note it on the individual counter page.
We do not scrape live production APIs — that would violate most providers' terms and produce misleading spikes. Instead we anchor to verified annual/daily rates and interpolate. Full source list per metric is linked from each dedicated page.

Do these numbers reset at midnight?
Yes — every counter above resets to zero at 00:00 in your local time and rebuilds through the day at its verified rate. The 'progress of the day' bar shows exactly how far through we are.
How accurate are 'today so far' figures?
Aggregate accuracy is within roughly ±2%. Individual seconds and hours fluctuate — peak hours run ~40% above average, overnight troughs ~30% below — but the 24-hour total lands on the verified 2026 average.
Where do the daily rates come from?
UN Population Division, Radicati email report, Statista, IEA (CO₂), IATA (flights), Netflix and Amazon investor filings, plus GSMA and Meta transparency reports for messaging. Every counter page lists its own sources.
Why is 'emails today' so much larger than 'searches today'?
Because most email traffic is automated: newsletters, notifications, receipts, and machine-to-machine mail. Human-written email is roughly 10-15% of the 300B/day total. Google searches, by contrast, are almost all human-initiated.
How many people are born vs die today?
Roughly 385,000 births vs 165,000 deaths — a net gain of about 220,000 humans every 24 hours, or 2.5 net new people every second worldwide.
How much CO₂ does the world emit in a single day?
Around 100 million tonnes of CO₂-equivalent — roughly 1,157 tonnes per second. Roughly 40% comes from electricity and heat, 25% from transport, and 20% from industry.
