Space is anything but empty. Every second, our planet hurtles through the cosmos, bombarded by cosmic rays, illuminated by solar energy, and accompanied by thousands of orbiting satellites. These counters reveal the invisible, ceaseless activity happening above our heads.
Since November 2000, humans have maintained a continuous presence in space aboard the International Space Station. Orbiting at 408 km altitude, the ISS completes 16 orbits daily while hosting groundbreaking experiments in microgravity, biology, and materials science. Over 270 astronauts from 20 countries have called it home.
We tend to think of Earth as stationary, but our planet moves at extraordinary speeds. It orbits the Sun at 107,000 km/h, while the solar system orbits the Milky Way's center at 828,000 km/h. Even the galaxy itself moves at 2.1 million km/h relative to the cosmic microwave background. Every second, you travel 30 km through space.

However, this proliferation raises concerns about space debris – over 30,000 tracked objects and millions of smaller fragments pose collision risks.
Earth is constantly bombarded by particles from deep space. Cosmic rays – high-energy protons and atomic nuclei – strike our atmosphere at nearly the speed of light. Most are harmlessly absorbed, but they produce secondary particles detectable at ground level. These cosmic visitors carry information about supernovae, black holes, and the most violent events in the universe.
The Sun delivers roughly 174,000 terawatts of energy to Earth's surface – about 10,000 times humanity's total energy consumption. In just one hour, enough solar energy reaches Earth to power all of civilization for an entire year. Harnessing even a fraction of this bounty could solve our energy challenges forever.
